Out of mind

Experiences, at the moment anyway, supervene only on bodies that house biofuelled nervous systems. But cognition already roams more widely. In our age of cognizing machines, the reach of cognition, outside small circles of homo- or animal-chauvinists, is known: cognition extends beyond human and animal minds.

Most real creatures that we think we know embody wonders we have hardly dreamed of. And there are other beings, equally real, which for most of human experience have been beyond imagining. As Zhuangzi wrote some 2,300 years ago, “all the creatures in this world have dimensions that cannot be calculated.”

The Book of Barely Imagined Beings by Caspar Henderson is published by Granta in the UK and by Chicago University Press in the US. In 2013 it was shortlisted for the Royal Society Winton prize for science books, a Society of Biology award, and the British Book Design Awards.
